More than half of Americans approve of the job President Obama is doing as commander-in-chief, according to a new CNN/ORC poll released Friday.
The poll finds that Obama has a 55 percent approval rating, which it said matches the high point for the president’s second term. It is also a higher approval rating than President Ronald Reagan’s at this same time in 1988.
{mosads}Separately, the poll found that 54 percent say things in the country are going well, while 46 percent say they are going badly.
Those figures are all good news for Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, who hopes to succeed Obama.
The poll reveals a huge split among supporters of Clinton and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, with 80 percent of Trump supporters saying things in the country are not going well. More than 90 percent of Clinton supporters believe things are going well.
Fifty-six percent of likely voters view the Republican Party unfavorably, while 46 percent view the Democratic party unfavorably. Forty-nine percent view the Democratic Party favorably, while 38 percent have a favorable view of the GOP.
Despite Obama’s high approval rating, 40 percent of Americans believe it would be a bad thing if Hillary Clinton continued his policies. Twenty-eight percent believe a President Clinton would continue Obama’s policies and it would be a good thing.
The poll was conducted by telephone from October 20 to 23, surveying 1,017 America adults. It has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
