Mitt Romney and President-elect Donald Trump will be able to work together for the good of the country, a top Trump aide said Thursday, even though the two bitterly feuded throughout the presidential campaign.
{mosads}Romney, who once called Trump a “con man,” a “phony” and a fraud,” is expected to meet with Trump this weekend to discuss a possible Cabinet position.
“I think what happens with consensus builders and good negotiators and successful businessmen who, you know, have to take the accounts of many different people, rivals, allies, is that they find a way to work together if it’s appropriate,” Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway said on CNN Thursday evening.
Trump also frequently attacked Romney, the 2012 GOP presidential nominee, for “choking” in his race to unseat President Obama.
But all of that is in the past, Conway said.
“And look — I think in politics people look at each other through these blue and red lenses, but businessmen like Romney and Trump, they tend to be able to shed those gladiator outfits of blue and red and try to solve problems and come together.”
Reports indicate Romney is being considered for Trump’s secretary of State.
Romney never endorsed a candidate in the general election, and he actively sought to recruit a third-party candidate to run against Trump and Hillary Clinton.
He also said it was “disqualifying” that Trump would not release his tax returns.
In March, Romney dedicated an entire speech to rebuking Trump’s candidacy, saying the prospects for a “safe and prosperous future” would greatly diminish under his leadership.
