Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Monday that Democrats will be to blame if the government shuts down at the end of the week.
If funding for a wall on the southern border is included in the bill and Democrats block it, Sessions said they should get the blame.
“It will be the Democrats who shut this government down to block the funding of the wall. That’s what the question is. Are they going to shut the government down?” he said in an interview on “Fox & Friends.”
He also accused the minority party of not being interested in solving the nation’s problems.
{mosads}“Throughout this whole process, I’ve been saying that whenever you come up with anything that actually fix the problems, that is what does not pass,” Sessions said.
“They’ll pass anything as long as it doesn’t work. They’ll talk about fixing the border again and again and again, but when the chips are down, they back off,” he said of Democrats.
The administration is seeking to get money to pay for the wall included in a bill to keep the government funded. The government will shut down on Saturday without action by Congress.
Democrats oppose including any funds to build the wall in the funding measure and have criticized Trump, who said Mexico would pay for construction of the wall during his campaign.
While Trump in a recent interview refused to say whether he would sign a bill that does not include funding for the wall, administration officials have insisted that Trump will get the funding and build the barrier.
“So Congress can find a host of ways to pay for this wall. It can be done through people who come to our country through Mexico, fees and costs and even fixing a tax abuse situation that I believe would make a lot of the payment toward fixing it,” Sessions said on Monday.
