Former longtime CBS News anchor Dan Rather on Monday blasted President Trump’s response to a recent terror attack in London.
“Careless statements that deepen divisions are not leadership,” he said on Facebook. “Also, we must process and think carefully about how our President publicly responded.”
“Understandably, many people around the world viewed his remarks as insensitive and peevish, mixed with flagrant misrepresentations of fact,” Rather added.
{mosads}“It is important for the world to know that his statements do not represent the sentiments and reactions of most Americans.”
Rather added that the “tone and substance” of Trump’s presidency is “alien to what the world had come to know as Americanism.”
Trump on Sunday called for an end to political correctness following a terror attack in London that killed seven people and wounded at least 48 others the night before.
“We must stop being politically correct and get down to the business of security for our people,” he tweeted. “If we don’t get smart it will only get worse.”
“Do you notice we are not having a gun debate right now?” Trump asked in a separate tweet. “That’s because they used knives and a truck!”
Attackers on Saturday drove a van into pedestrians on the London Bridge before stabbing others near Borough Market there.
London police told reporters they believed they had killed all of the attackers.
Trump on Saturday tweeted a renewed call for courts to approve his executive order banning travel to the U.S. from six Muslim-majority nations after the incident.
“We need to be smart, vigilant and tough,” he said. “We need the courts to give us back our rights. We need the Travel Ban as an extra level of safety!”
