Trump says Indonesia is ‘a place I’d like to go’
President Trump said Saturday while meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo that Indonesia is a place he’d “like to go.”
Widodo asked Trump when the supporters in his country could “personally welcome you to Indonesia,” according to a White House transcript.
“We’ll get there. We’ll get there. It’s a place I’d like to go,” Trump responded.
“I can get into serious trouble if I don’t bring back some good news for your millions of fans in Indonesia,” Widodo jokingly said in response.
{mosads}Widodo also expressed gratefulness for Vice President Pence’s visit to Jakarta earlier this year.
“We really, really appreciate that your administration choose Indonesia as one of the four stops on your Vice President’s tour around Asia,” he said. “Vice President Pence underlined the commitment of the USA to strengthen the strategic partnership with Indonesia. From our perspective, his visit was very, very successful.”
Trump and Widodo gave joint remarks before their closed-door meeting, one of multiple official meetings the president had with world leaders outside of the G-20 Summit in Hamburg, Germany this weekend.
Trump also met with major players like German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin amid the conference, which brought leaders together to discuss global issues.
Former President Barack Obama and his family visited Indonesia last month, a country he had moved to with his mother for four years when he was at the age of 6.
The former leader’s trip came at a time when Indonesia’s Tourism Ministry was pushing to promote U.S. travel to the country, the Jakarta Post reported.
