President Trump said early Wednesday that he spoke to Republican Senate nominee Roy Moore after the former judge’s victory in Alabama’s GOP primary, adding that the conservative firebrand sounds like a “really great guy.”
“Spoke to Roy Moore of Alabama last night for the first time. Sounds like a really great guy who ran a fantastic race. He will help to #MAGA!” the president tweeted, referring to his own “Make America Great Again” campaign slogan.
Trump had endorsed GOP establishment favorite Sen. Luther Strange (R-Ala.), whom Moore defeated with 57 percent of the vote on Tuesday.
{mosads}The president had tweeted about Strange several times in the days leading up to the primary. Those tweets disappeared Tuesday night, however.
Trump, at a rally for Strange last Friday, also openly mulled whether endorsing him was a mistake.
Moore, who is a staunchly-conservative evangelical Christian, is seen as the favorite to win the general election against Democrat Doug Jones in December.
