Trump didn’t send promised check to family of fallen soldier for nearly four months
President Trump didn’t send a check for $25,000 that he pledged to the family of a fallen soldier for nearly four months after he made the promise.
The Washington Post reported Wednesday that Trump had not yet sent a personal gift of $25,000 to the family of Army Sgt. Dillon Baldridge after Trump promised to do so “a few weeks” after Baldridge’s death.
Baldridge’s father, Chris, told the Post that Trump had pledged to give the money in a phone call after his son’s death.
{mosads}“He said, ‘I’m going to write you a check out of my personal account for $25,000,’ and I was just floored,” Chris Baldridge told the Post.
“I could not believe he was saying that, and I wish I had it recorded because the man did say this. He said, ‘No other president has ever done something like this,’ but he said, ‘I’m going to do it.’ ”
The White House responded to the report later on Wednesday, saying the check “has been sent.”
“It’s disgusting that the media is taking something that should be recognized as a generous and sincere gesture, made privately by the president, and using it to advance the media’s biased agenda,” White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters told the Post.
About four months had passed between Trump’s promise to give the money and when it was actually sent to the Baldridge family.
The new report comes as Trump faces major backlash for his comments to the widow of a soldier killed in Niger.
Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) said Trump had told the widow of Army Sgt. La David Johnson that her husband “knew what he was signing up for, but I guess it hurts anyway.”
Johnson’s mother also confirmed Wilson’s account.
Trump has denied the report, claiming that Wilson had “totally fabricated” her story.
“I didn’t say what that congresswoman said — didn’t say it at all — she knows it,” Trump said Wednesday. “I would like her to make the statement again because I did not say what she said.”
