Trump warns: Don’t underestimate ‘UNITY’ of GOP

President Trump on Thursday said the Republican Party’s “unity” should not be underestimated in a tweet following open criticism from several Senate Republicans.

“Do not underestimate the UNITY within the Republican Party!” Trump wrote on Twitter.

Trump has sought to portray an image of harmony among the GOP after feuds this week with retiring GOP Sens. Bob Corker (Tenn.) and Jeff Flake (Ariz.). Flake delivered a blistering speech about Trump on the Senate floor Tuesday.

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) has also recently expressed distress over the direction of his party. The Nebraska lawmaker told a podcast this week that the GOP “has gone post-constitutional in all sorts of fundamental ways.”

{mosads}Last week, the president held a joint press conference with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in the White House Rose Garden in an attempt to demonstrate GOP unity.

The portrayal of unity also comes after Republicans’ repeated failed attempts to repeal and replace ObamaCare despite holding the majority in both chambers of Congress.

Trump and congressional Republicans have now set their sights on tax reform, which was a main focus of the policy lunch the president attended Tuesday on Capitol Hill.
