Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci defended White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Tuesday, saying the administration’s mouthpiece does her best to protect President Trump while also telling the truth.

“I think she does the best of her ability to tell the truth but also to protect the president,” Scaramucci told host Chris Cuomo on CNN’s “New Day.”

Scaramucci compared Sanders’s role to a hockey goalie who must block all the questions hurtling at her.

“The shots are coming at her super hard and she’s doing everything she can to block as many shots as possible. There’s confidential information that she has been made privy to, and she has to protect the president from getting that information out there. She also has to deliver messaging on behalf of the entire administration,” he continued.

When Cuomo pressed Scaramucci on Sanders’s honesty, claiming “there is a constant stream of deception that comes from that podium,” Scaramucci stood by his defense that she does well in a “tough job.”

“I think she has done a very good job of opening up the White House, speaking from the podium — in my opinion very truthfully. I have not seen every single press conference. You are probably micro-analyzing it closer than me,” he continued.

“Sarah is doing a great job,” he said, rating her performance so far as an “A plus.”

Trump over the summer dismissed Scaramucci from his post as White House communications director after just 10 days, ending a short but tumultuous tenure running the administration’s press shop.
