Poll: Majority says Trump policies have not helped middle-class families

A majority of Americans say that President Trump’s policies have not helped middle-class families, according to a new Monmouth University poll.

Though Trump has touted the GOP tax plan as a “gift” to middle class families, 53 percent of respondents said that middle class families have benefited “not at all” from his policies.

Twenty-five percent said that middle-class families have benefited “a little” from Trump policies, and only 11 percent said they have benefitted “a lot.”

The poll also found that 47 percent of Americans at least somewhat disapprove of the GOP’s tax-reform plan, with 35 percent saying they strongly disapprove, while only 26 percent say they somewhat or strongly approve.

The poll was conducted Dec. 10-12, just days before the GOP released the final version of their tax bill. Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, said that the “basic contours” of the final plan are the same as when the poll was taken.

“Many Americans see this bill more as an attempt by Republicans to gain a political victory and would rather see Congress scrap this plan and start over,” Murray said.

The final version of the bill was released Friday, and Congress is expected to vote on the legislation this week to send a bill to Trump’s desk by Christmas.

Though Trump and the GOP have boasted that the plan will benefit middle-class families, Democrats have criticized the bill as primarily benefitting corporations and the wealthy at the expense of poor and middle-class Americans.
