Forty-one percent of respondents in a new survey said Congress should hold impeachment hearings aimed at removing President Trump from office.
According to an NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey released Wednesday morning, 54 percent of Americans think Congress should not hold impeachment hearings. Five percent said they are not sure.
{mosads}The results fall along party lines, with 70 percent of Democrats saying Congress should begin impeachment hearings and just 7 percent of Republicans saying the same. Forty percent of independents back the hearings, pollsters found.
The results of the poll come as special counsel Robert Mueller investigates Russia’s election meddling and any potential ties between the Trump campaign and Moscow.
That investigation has lead to a guilty plea from former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who is the first administration official to be brought down by the special counsel’s probe.
That same poll found that 38 percent of Americans will definitely cast a ballot for Trump’s opponent in the 2020 election. Thirty-six percent of those polled said they would definitely or probably vote for Trump.
The survey of 900 people was conducted from Dec. 13-15. It has a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.
