Top Interior aide resigns after anti-Muslim posts surface
A top Interior Department official who served as a special assistant to Secretary Ryan Zinke resigned Wednesday after CNN discovered her history of making anti-Muslim and conspiracy theory posts on social media.
CNN reports Christine Bauserman resigned from her post Wednesday after the network informed Interior of a series of controversial posts Bauserman had shared on her Facebook and Twitter accounts.
The posts include a number critical of former President Obama, including one post that asked Facebook users to share it if they wanted President Trump to unseal Obama’s birth and college records.
{mosads}She also shared a post that falsely claimed a doctor was found dead under suspicious circumstances after exposing “Clinton Foundation corruption in Haiti,” according to CNN.
Bauserman also shared several posts attacking Muslims, including one post that listed a series of terrorist attacks with the caption “If you don’t call this a pattern, you are out of your mind.” In another post made after the 2016 shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla., Bauserman she said the attack showed the “reality of the Hate that is Islam.”
She also reportedly shared a Facebook post supporting “straight pride” in 2013, according to CNN.
Bauserman worked on Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and first joined the Trump administration as a member of the “beachhead teams” that arrived at federal agencies during the presidential transition.
At the Interior Department, Bauserman worked as a special assistant to Zinke, working to coordinate policy briefings and contributing operational support.
In a statement to CNN, an Interior Department spokeswoman called Bauserman’s posts “inappropriate and unacceptable.”
“The positions expressed by Ms. Bauserman are inappropriate and unacceptable, and they are not consistent with those of the Secretary or the Trump Administration. The Department has accepted Ms. Bauserman’s letter of resignation,” Heather Swift told CNN in the statement.
