Trump: Kim summit takes world ‘a big step back from potential nuclear catastrophe’

President Trump said on Tuesday that the U.S.-North Korea summit has reduced the risk of “potential Nuclear catastrophe” and thanked North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for meeting with him.

“The World has taken a big step back from potential Nuclear catastrophe! No more rocket launches, nuclear testing or research! The hostages are back home with their families. Thank you to Chairman Kim, our day together was historic!” Trump tweeted on Tuesday night.

Trump’s comments come hours after the summit in Singapore between the two leaders concluded with a vague joint accord stating both nations were committed to denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea has made and broken similar promises in the past.

The president, however, noted that he “knows for a fact” that Kim “wants to do the right thing.”

No official announcement has yet been made about whether North Korea made an agreement concerning nuclear testing or research, as Trump mentioned in his tweet.

Trump agreed that war games with South Korea would be halted while negotiations with North Korea continued. The president framed the announcement as a cost-saving measure but also noted that the drills were “very provocative.”

It remains unclear whether there is a difference between the large-scale war games Trump wants to end and the smaller, day-to-day training. The Pentagon has yet to release information about whether any exercises will be stopped or curtailed.
