President Trump has received a new letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un following up on their nuclear summit in Singapore, the White House said Thursday.
Trump referred to a “nice letter” from Kim in a tweet sent early Thursday morning. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders later confirmed the letter was received on Wednesday.
{mosads}”The ongoing correspondence between the two leaders is aimed at following up on their meeting in Singapore and advancing the commitments made in the US-DPRK joint statement,” Sanders said in a statement, using an acronym for the formal name of North Korea.
Trump and the White House did not reveal the contents of the letter.
The president wrote in his tweet to Kim, “l look forward to seeing you soon!” But Sanders later said no second meeting is “locked in or finalized,” but added the White House is open to the possibility.
The latest correspondence comes at a pivotal time for Trump’s bid to ease tensions with Pyongyang over Kim’s nuclear ambitions.
Multiple media reports have said North Korea has continued to work on its nuclear and ballistic missile program in the weeks following the June summit, even as Trump has publicly touted examples of how his diplomacy is working.
Trump on Twitter thanked Kim for “keeping [his] word” by returning the presumed remains of missing U.S. soldiers from the Korean War. Vice President Pence traveled to Hawaii on Wednesday to receive those remains.
The nuclear developments, however, have reportedly frustrated Trump, who has made his overtures to North Korea his administration’s top foreign policy priority.
