Colbert: Trump is the only person ‘who can bring down a funeral’
Late-night host Stephen Colbert on Wednesday mocked President Trump being seated beside the Obamas and the Clintons at former President George H.W. Bush’s funeral.
“It was a full state funeral,” Colbert said. “It was quite a moving site to see the presidents and the first ladies in the front row, waiting to honor President Bush, chatting comfortably with one another.”
{mosads}The “Late Show” host then played a clip of Michelle Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton talking before the funeral began.
“Then it became silent staring time,” Colbert, a frequent critic of the president, said as he next showed a clip of Trump sitting silently beside the two former first couples.
“Donald Trump is the only person in the world who can bring down a funeral,” the comedian quipped.
Trump has had an acrimonious relationship with his predecessors, whom he has often publicly criticized since taking office.
He and first lady Melania Trump greeted both couples when they first sat down, a moment that circulated on social media as many wondered if the parties involved felt uncomfortable. Both Trumps shook hands with each of the Obamas, but Trump and the Clintons did not appear to acknowledge each other.
Colbert also slammed Trump for remaining silent as the funeral attendees, including the former presidents, read the Apostles’ Creed from their programs.
” ‘I’m sorry, I zoned out there for a minute,’ ” Colbert said, imitating Trump. ” ‘I was thinking about all the evangelicals who voted for me. What are we doing, the Macarena? I’m in.’ ”
Bush’s funeral was held at Washington National Cathedral on Wednesday.
Bush, who served as president from 1989 to 1993, died on Friday at his Houston home. He was 94 years old.
