President Trump’s approval rating has sunk to its lowest point in more than a year as the partial government shutdown continues into its fifth week.
In an Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll published Wednesday, just 34 percent of respondents said they approve of the job Trump is doing as president.
{mosads}The new rating is down from 42 percent approval in the same poll in December, according to the AP.
A majority of respondents also blamed Trump for the shutdown, according to the poll.
The president’s approval rating has dipped in a number of polls as the shutdown drags on. A CAPS/Harris Poll at the end of December found Trump’s approval rating at 44 percent, just a few days into the shutdown.
An AP-NORC poll in October 2017 found Trump’s approval rating at a record-low 32 percent. That rating came around the time Trump was facing criticism for his handling of hurricane relief in Puerto Rico.
The current Real Clear Politics average of polls shows Trump’s approval at 40.8 percent.
The partial government shutdown was triggered by a standoff between Trump and congressional Democrats over the president’s demand for $5 billion in funds for his proposed border wall with Mexico. Democrats have offered $1.3 billion in border security measures.
Nearly 800,000 federal workers have been furloughed or are working without pay as the record-long shutdown hit 33 days on Wednesday.
