George Conway: Case for Trump’s impeachment better than Nixon’s

In a series of tweets Tuesday morning, attorney George Conway, husband of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, said President Trump engaged in misconduct “worse than the misconduct that led to Nixon’s resignation.”

Conway linked to a column by The Washington Post’s Greg Sargent that said alleged attempts by Trump to stymie special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation “impeded the inquiry into not just his conduct, but also into the Russian attack on our political system.”

“Exactly right,” Conway, a frequent Trump critic, wrote Tuesday, citing the president’s oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

“Trump violated that oath and put his own vanity and self-interest above that of the nation and people whose laws and Constitution he swore to faithfully execute and uphold,” Conway tweeted. “If that’s not impeachable, nothing is.”

This angle, Conway wrote, is “why Trump’s misconduct is worse than the misconduct that led to Nixon’s resignation.”

Conway called on Congress to remove Trump in a Washington Post column last week, writing that Mueller’s report portrays Trump as “a cancer in the presidency.” Conway made the same comparison to Nixon in the column, writing that Nixon was “passive” compared to Trump.

“Do we have a president who is loyal to the country, or loyal only to himself? When you put the question that way, and the object of the question is Donald J. Trump, now that we know all that we know about him and have seen all that we have seen, there can only be one answer,” Conway tweeted Tuesday.

Conway’s excoriation of Trump has drawn the president’s ire before, with Trump calling him a “total loser” and “husband from hell” in late March, but Trump has largely been silent on Conway since despite Conway’s continued criticism.
