Trump blasts Russia probe as ‘an attempted overthrow of the United States government’

President Trump blasted special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s election interference Thursday as a “coup.”

“This was a coup,” Trump said on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show. “This was an attempted overthrow of the United States government.”

Later in the interview, Trump compared the probe to the Watergate scandal which resulted in former President Nixon’s resignation.

“Bigger than Watergate,” Trump said. “Because it means so much. This was a coup. This wasn’t stealing information from an office in the Watergate apartments, this was an attempted coup.”

{mosads}The president later added that the investigation into Russian interference was something that would happen in “a third world country.”

The report on special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe was released earlier this month.

The investigation did not uncover coordination between Trump’s 2016 campaign and the Kremlin.

But it did confirm the American intelligence community’s conclusion that Russia interfered with the 2016 election in “sweeping and systematic fashion” with the goal of electing Trump.

Trump and his supporters have taken a victory lap following the report’s release, touting that it proved “no collusion, no obstruction.”

On the issue of obstruction, Mueller’s team detailed 10 potential cases of obstruction of justice, but did not make a determination on the issue.
