An official Twitter account for President Trump’s reelection campaign was mocked on Saturday after it pushed back on reports that Trump had said Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, made “nasty” comments about him.
The account, which its bio says is meant to promote pro-Trump messages and combat “fake news,” went after CNN on Saturday and claimed the network falsely misrepresented Trump’s comments about the member of the British royal family.
“Here is what he actually said. Listen for yourself!” the account tweeted along with a captioned video.{mosads}
Speaking to British tabloid The Sun ahead of his state visit to the United Kingdom, Trump said he was not aware that Markle had called him “divisive” and “misogynistic” during his 2016 presidential campaign.
“I didn’t know that. What can I say?” he told the paper. “I didn’t know that she was nasty.”
The president then added in the interview that he hopes Markle, an American-born actress, will succeed as a member of the royal family.
“She will be very good,” he said.
Twitter users, including several journalists, were quick to point out that the video does validate reports that Trump used the term “nasty.”
Trump is slated to meet with a number of members of the royal family, including Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles, during his visit to the U.K. next week.
Markle’s husband, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, will reportedly join Trump for a private lunch, as will Prince William and Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton.
But Markle, who recently gave birth to a baby boy named Archie, will be on maternity leave during the visit.
