Trump says he’s received new letter from Kim Jong Un

President Trump said Tuesday he received a “beautiful” letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un amid their apparent impasse on nuclear talks.

Trump called the letter “very warm” and “very nice” and expressed confidence the two sides could eventually reach an agreement.

“We have a very good relationship together,” Trump told reporters as he departed the White House for a trip to Iowa.{mosads}

The president added that another meeting could take place, but that Kim has “kept his word” and “that’s very important to me.”

Trump is set to travel to Asia later this month. He will attend the Group of 20 Summit in Osaka, Japan, and meet with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

Negotiations over the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula have hit a standstill after Trump and Kim’s second face-to-face summit ended abruptly and without a formal agreement earlier this year.

In the time since, North Korea has resumed testing of short-range missiles, prompting allies to question whether Kim is interested in re-engaging with the U.S. on denuclearization talks.

National security adviser John Bolton and U.S. allies have said the short-range missile tests violated a United Nations Security Council resolution, but Trump has publicly said he’s not bothered by the launches.

The president has repeatedly offered praise for Kim, calling him a “very smart man” and touting their personal relationship.
