Investigation finds youngest migrant child separated from family was 4-month-old baby

A recent investigation by The New York Times found that the youngest migrant child to be separated from his family by the Trump administration was 4 months old.

The Times revealed the discovery on Friday as part of the newest segment on its documentary series, “The Weekly,” which focuses on issues being investigated by its journalists.

{mosads}A brief clip of the segment features footage and photos of the baby, Constantin Mutu, and his parents, Vasile and Florentina Mutu, who are from Romania. 

The exclusive is centered around Times journalist Caitlin Dickerson’s reporting on the family and their separation. 

Vasile and Florentina Mutu reportedly fled Romania to Mexico in 2018 with two of their five children in efforts to seek asylum in the United States. But after they both lost track of each other in Mexico, Vasile Mutu was reportedly taken into custody with Constantin at the border in Texas.

Shortly after he and his son were apprehended, Florentina Mutu and their other child reportedly returned to Romania.

Vasile Mutu told the Times that he was pressured by border officials to withdraw his request for asylum due to his criminal background.

He was later separated from his son under the controversial “zero tolerance” policy implemented by the Trump administration that led to thousands of family separations last year. His son was reportedly placed in the care of a family in Michigan while he was deported back to Romania.
