Trump highlights Gingrich comments on ‘coup’ by ‘left-wingers’

President Trump highlighted comments from former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) describing the impeachment inquiry as a “coup” by “left-wingers.”

The White House tweeted out a video of the former Speaker on “Fox & Friends,” accompanied by text of his quote describing the House Democrats’ efforts as a “coup.” The president retweeted the White House’s post.

The former Speaker defended the president on the Fox News program, saying Trump was “asking for help in getting to the truth” in his phone call with the Ukrainian president that is now under scrutiny in the House. Gingrich compared the impeachment inquiry to the Salem witch trials, saying “all of this is garbage.”

A whistleblower report filed to the House indicated the president asked Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son on unfounded corruption allegations days after withholding military aid from the country.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) launched the inquiry after news of the report broke in September. Trump has repeatedly called the House inquiry a “coup” and a “witch hunt.”
