Trump meets with UK’s Johnson on sidelines of NATO gathering

President Trump on Tuesday met with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on the sidelines of a gathering of NATO leaders in London.

The president tweeted Wednesday that the two men discussed “numerous subjects,” including the alliance and trade. The meeting took place at 10 Downing Street, where Johnson held a private reception for NATO leaders.

The White House said that the two leaders also touched on “a range of security issues,” including collaborating to “ensure the security of our telecommunication networks and guard against untrusted providers.”

The meeting was not listed on the president’s public schedule. Trump was not initially expected to speak with Johnson, a scheduling decision based on the upcoming British elections.

The U.K. is holding parliamentary elections on Dec. 12 that are critical for Johnson and his Conservative Party’s efforts to push through Brexit.

Trump, who is deeply unpopular in the U.K., has been an outspoken fan of the prime minister and a critic of his rivals, namely Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn.

But the president had vowed to avoid wading into the race while in London this week.

“I can work with anybody,” Trump told reporters Tuesday. “I’m a very easy person to work with, you know. You wouldn’t believe it.”
