41 percent afraid about remainder of Trump second term: Survey

Just more than 4 in 10 Americans said they are concerned about President Trump’s actions since returning to the White House, and many feel Congress and the courts are not doing enough to check him, according to a new survey.

The CNN/SRSS poll, released Tuesday, found that 41 percent of U.S. adults are anxious about the remainder of Trump’s second term — an increase of 6 points since February.

Another 16 percent said they are pessimistic, while 28 percent said the opposite. Some 15 percent said they were enthusiastic as the president hit his first 100 days in office, the survey shows.

The uptick in those who are worried was higher among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, with 71 percent stating they are afraid of what is in store. In February, the figure stood at 63 percent.

On the opposite end, only 8 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents said they felt the same about the president’s remaining time in office. 

More than half of the respondents, 56 percent, said Congress is not doing enough to check Trump’s actions as commander in chief. The poll also found that roughly 50 percent said the same about judges and courts, while another 53 percent argued the current administration is not doing enough to adhere to checks and balances.

Most of the Democrats and independents surveyed said they believe the president’s power is going unchecked, while 52 percent of Republicans think the judges and courts are overreaching in their pursuit to check his power.

Nearly 6 in 10 respondents, 58 percent, said the GOP’s trifecta is bad for the U.S., a 5-point increase since Trump was sworn in, according to the data.

Just more than a third, 37 percent, said they approve of the way Republican leaders in Congress — primarily House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) — are handling their roles. Support for top Democrats on Capitol Hill was more dismal, with 27 percent approving of the party’s leadership, the survey found.

Around 46 percent of respondents said they disapprove of Congressional leaders from both parties.

The CNN/SRSS poll was conducted April 17-24 among 1,678 respondents and has a margin of error of 2.9 points.
