Trump says Giuliani is ‘doing well’ after COVID-19 diagnosis
President Trump on Monday said he spoke with his campaign lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who is in the hospital recovering from coronavirus.
“Rudy’s doing well. I just spoke to him. He’s doing very well,” Trump told reporters at a White House event where he presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom to wrestler Dan Gable. “No temperature, and he actually called me early this morning. He was the first call I got. No, he’s doing very well.”
Trump announced on Sunday afternoon that Giuliani had tested positive for coronavirus. The former New York City mayor later confirmed his diagnosis and said he was feeling well, despite reports he was admitted to Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Giuliani, who has been leading Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the presidential election, has traveled to Michigan and Arizona in recent days to make his case.
Giuliani’s temporary absence comes as Trump and his allies are running out of time to push their claims.
The Trump legal team has been vastly unsuccessful in changing results in any key battleground states, as judges in Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and elsewhere have dismissed cases for lack of standing.
The Electoral College is slated to meet next week to officially certify Joe Biden as the winner of the election. Asked Monday if his intent was to change the outcome or merely convince the public it was unfair, Trump again falsely claimed he had won.
“I think the case has already been made if you look at the polls,” Trump said, perhaps referring to polls that showed many Republicans did not trust the election results. “It was a rigged election. If you look at the different states, the election was totally rigged. It’s a disgrace to our country.”
At one point, he nodded to Gable’s success on the wrestling mat, Trump quipped that he had been pretty successful himself, saying he was “2-0” in campaigns despite losing last month.
