President Trump spoke to French President Emmanuel Macron following his coronavirus diagnosis Thursday and wished him a “speedy recovery.”

“President Trump wished President Macron a speedy recovery and quick return to his full duties. President Trump also extended his best wishes for a Merry Christmas to President Macron, his family, and the People of France,” White House spokesman Judd Deere said in a statement on Friday, noting that the conversation took place the day prior.

Macron’s official residence, the Elysée Palace, said in a brief statement Thursday that Macron had been diagnosed with the virus and was experiencing symptoms. Macron is expected to self-isolate for seven days and plans to continue to work while in isolation.

The French leader recently met with a group of European leaders in Brussels.

The phone call was the first between Trump and Macron since late October. It is unclear what else was discussed on the call. Macron also recently spoke with President-elect Joe Biden following his victory in the November presidential election.

Macron is the latest in a handful of world leaders to contract the virus.

Trump was diagnosed with COVID-19 in early October and recovered after a brief stay at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he received an experimental antibody treatment and a steroid known as dexamethasone.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro have also tested positive for the virus.

Macron posted a self-shot video on Friday in which he discussed his illness, blaming it on momentary negligence and bad luck, and promising to be transparent about his condition.

Macron said that his symptoms included a headache, fatigue and a cough.
