Watch: Trump speaks at Fort Bragg amid feud over Los Angeles response
President Trump spoke at Fort Bragg on Tuesday to commemorate the Army’s 250th anniversary, ahead of a parade through Washington, D.C., celebrating the occasion on Saturday.
Trump’s speech came as he feuds with California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) over his deployment of National Guard members and Marines to Los Angeles, where protesters are demanding an end to workplace immigration raids.
Trump, for the first time in 50 years, federalized state National Guard forces without the consent of the governor, and on Monday took the even rarer step of sending active-duty Marines to the city. California has sued the administration over the move.
Trump will preside over a military parade through downtown D.C. on Saturday, which is expected to cost between $25 million and $45 million. Washington’s mayor has expressed concern over the cost of repairing roads torn up by tanks rolling through the city.
