Pompeo starts countdown to next election on first day out of office

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted a countdown to the 2024 presidential election on Thursday, President Biden’s first full day in office.

Pompeo, who is considered a possible 2024 presidential contender, was often criticized for using his former office and platform as America’s top diplomat to make explicitly political statements.

He addressed the Republican National Convention from Jerusalem during an official administration trip, and in his final statement as secretary of State, he castigated multiculturalism as antithetical to American values.

Soon after Biden was projected the winner of the presidential election, Pompeo told press that the State Department intended to begin “a smooth transition to a second Trump administration.” Earlier this month, Voice of America’s White House correspondent Patsy Widakuswara was reassigned after asking Pompeo if he regretted the remarks.

Biden has pledged to fight for unity during a highly fractured and partisan time in America, though Pompeo’s tweet could indicate some conservatives don’t plan on meeting him halfway.
