Biden traveling to Georgia to mark 100 days in office
President Biden and first lady Jill Biden will travel to Atlanta on his 100th day in office on April 29.
The president will participate in a car rally and highlight his accomplishments within the first 100 days, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Friday.
The trip will be Biden’s second to Atlanta in his first months in office.
Georgia has become a political hot spot this year over a controversial voting law.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) last month signed the law that has been sharply criticized by the White House and Democrats as restrictive and racist. The president last month announced that the Justice Department is “taking a look” at the new law, and Atlanta-based companies Delta Air Lines and Coca-Cola, as well as dozens of other major corporations, have condemned it. MLB also moved its All-Star game from Atlanta to Denver.
Georgia was a pivotal state for Biden in 2020 when two runoffs in January delivered Democrats their narrow majority in the Senate. Democratic Sens. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff were elected just days before Biden was sworn in in January.
Biden traveled to the city in March, a visit that was initially planned to highlight the passage of his $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package.
Biden delivered a speech in Atlanta decrying anti-Asian hate crimes following a deadly shooting targeting massage parlors in the Atlanta area.
Biden had been scheduled to attend a political event during his March trip that was canceled due to the shooting.
