Roughly 85 percent of Democrats would give President Biden an “A” or “B” grade on his report card for his first 100 days in office, according to a new Politico-Morning Consult poll released Wednesday.
Along with overwhelming support among Democrats, 44 percent of independents in the poll gave the president the same ratings.
The independent and intraparty support for Biden in his first 100 days is more than what was recorded for former President Trump at the same point in 2017, when just 32 percent of independents gave him an “A” or “B,” and 72 percent of Republicans said the same.
However, Biden received high grades from just 14 percent of Republicans, the same percentage of Democrats who gave an “A” or “B” to Trump just before his 100th day in office.
Wednesday’s poll reported Biden’s overall job approval rating at 60 percent, which was 12 points higher than the 48 percent recorded for Trump at the same time in his term.
Out of the more than 1,900 registered voters who participated in the poll, about 41 percent gave Biden an “A” or “B” for his efforts to fulfill his campaign promise of restoring unity in a fervently divided country, while 51 percent gave him a “C” or worse in that specific category.
However, 53 percent in the Politico-Morning Consult poll said Biden has done more to unite than divide the country as president, while 35 percent said the opposite.
The poll comes the same day Biden is scheduled to deliver his first address to a joint session of Congress, during which he is expected to focus on outlining his American Families Plan, which calls for $1 trillion in new spending and $800 billion in new tax credits.
The package also aims to significantly expand access to preschool and community college, as well as child care and health care benefits.
Other polls have noted a similarly high job approval rating for Biden ahead of his first 100 days in office, including a Washington Post-ABC News poll released early Sunday that found that 52 percent of respondents said they at least somewhat approve of the actions Biden has taken so far, while 42 percent disapprove.
An NBC News poll also released Sunday found Biden with a 53 percent approval rating, while a Fox News survey had it at 54 percent.
Wednesday’s Politico-Morning Consult poll, conducted from Saturday to Monday, reported a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
