Biden to travel to Colorado to survey wildfire damage

President Biden on Friday will travel to Boulder, Colo., to survey the damage from the wildfires last week, the White House announced on Wednesday.

The president will continue on from Boulder to Las Vegas, where he will attend the memorial service honoring the late Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Saturday.

Nearly 1,000 homes were destroyed when wildfires ripped through neighborhoods in the suburbs northwest of Denver just before the new year. Two people who reportedly lived in destroyed homes are still missing.

Biden approved a Colorado disaster declaration on Saturday, ordering federal aid to be made available to those impacted by wildfires. The aid may include federal grants for temporary housing and repairs and loans to cover uninsured property. 

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) spoke to the president on Friday and described the impacts of the wildfire. The president said he would provide resources to help.

Biden also traveled to Colorado in September to promote the bipartisan infrastructure deal and his Build Back Better agenda in Arvada.

The White House has not shared more details of the Boulder trip. It comes the day after first lady Jill Biden is scheduled to visit Kentucky to survey damage from the tornadoes in the state last month. The president traveled to Kentucky shortly after the storm.
