Candidates make final pitches, settle in for results

John McCain and Barack Obama campaigned until the end, making final stops Tuesday as voters went to the polls in what appears to be record numbers.

{mosads}From coast to coast, voting appeared to be going smoothly for the most part, but the McCain campaign distributed e-mails throughout the day with concerns and allegations about voter intimidation and fraud.

Sen. Obama (D-Ill.), as is his Election Day tradition, played basketball Tuesday afternoon after voting Tuesday morning in Chicago and then making a campaign stop in Indiana.

Sen. McCain (R-Ariz.), who usually goes to a movie on Election Day, opted instead to hit the battleground states of Colorado and New Mexico after voting in Phoenix.

Democratic vice presidential candidate Sen. Joe Biden voted in Delaware while his GOP counterpart Gov. Sarah Palin voted in Alaska.

There were reports from around the country of long lines, but huge voting problems had not materialized by late in the day.

The McCain campaign said throughout the day that there were several attempts by Democratic supporters to suppress or intimidate Republican voters in Virginia, New Hampshire and the critical state of Pennsylvania.
