MoveOn.org is holding a vote among its 8 million members on whether to launch a campaign to urge Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) to run for president.
If the campaign is approved, the liberal group will set up offices in New Hampshire and Iowa, run ads touting Warren’s accomplishments and get donors to commit to supporting a Warren candidacy, according to a release.
{mosads}“We are prepared to show Senator Warren she has the support she needs to enter — and win — the presidential race,” said Ilya Sheyman, executive director of MoveOn.org Political Action.
Warren is a rising Democratic star who won her seat in 2012 on a message of economic populism. She was previously a law professor who helped to create the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Hillary Clinton is the odds-on favorite to win the Democratic nominations if she runs for the White House, as widely expected. Liberals have been clamoring for a rival to Clinton.
Warren has repeatedly said she would not run for president, but that hasn’t put off the groups urging her to get in the race. In November, she was named to a new post in the Senate Democratic leadership as a nod to her popularity.
