Former Rep. Scott McInnis (R-Colo.) confirmed reports Wednesday that he will not seek the Republican nomination for the 2008 Senate race in Colorado.
McInnis had said early on there was “no question” he would run, and he formed an exploratory committee last month. But on Wednesday, he said in a release that, after meeting with voters, party officials and his family, he has decided against a bid.
"I will remain actively involved,” he said, “just not on the ballot.”
His exit clears the way for former Rep. Bob Schaffer, who state Republicans have zeroed in on, to take frontrunner status. Schaffer has been noncommittal thus far but has been making the rounds.
Democrats appear set with their candidate, Rep. Mark Udall (D-Colo.), who has not declared officially but said in 2005 that he would run for the seat.
Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Colo.) announced in January that he would not seek a third term in 2008. He is the only senator up for reelection so far to announce a retirement.
