George W. Bush says he is proud of his brother for running a classy campaign for president.

“Laura and I are proud of Jeb and Columba for the character and class they brought to this important campaign,” Bush wrote, in a statement issued Saturday night from Crawford, Texas, and reported by ABC News.

“I was moved by Jeb’s concession speech.”

The former president, who had campaigned for his brother this week in South Carolina, said he had spoken to Jeb after he quit the race on Saturday night and congratulated him on his campaign.

“I told Jeb how proud I am of him and his staff for running a campaign that looked to the future, presented serious policy proposals, and elevated the tone of the race,” the former president wrote.

“Jeb’s decision to suspend his campaign reflects his selfless character and patriotism.”
