Mo Brooks asks Trump to reconsider endorsement of GOP rival

Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) is asking President Trump to reconsider his endorsement of Sen. Luther Strange (R-Ala.) in Alabama’s Senate race. 

Responding to an earlier tweet from Trump questioning Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-Ky.) ability to advance his policy agenda, Brooks cast himself as a do-or-die supporter of the president and asked him to reconsider his support for Strange.

“I agree completely, Mr. President. McConnell & Strange don’t support your agenda. I do,” Brooks wrote on Twitter. “Reconsider endorsement @realDonaldTrump?”

{mosads}Brooks is challenging Strange for the Senate seat previously held by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Strange was appointed to temporarily fill the seat after Sessions was confirmed to the top Justice Department job in February.

Strange has the backing of McConnell, who has put pressure on his allies to support the Alabama Republican. And Trump tweeted his endorsement of Strange Tuesday night. 

Brooks said Wednesday morning that he was “baffled” by Trump’s endorsement, suggesting that McConnell “somehow misled the President” into doing so.

“In any event, while Mitch McConnell and the Swamp managed to mislead the President last night, I still support the America First Agenda, and the polls show we have momentum,” Brooks said in a statement.
