Gillibrand cruises to victory in New York Senate race

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) cruised to reelection on Tuesday, easily securing her upper chamber seat for another term.

Her win against Republican challenger Chele Farley was expected, with polls indicating a wide margin of victory leading up to Nov. 6. The Cook Political Report had also rated the New York Senate race as a “solid” Democratic race.

Gillibrand, who took former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat in 2009, has been rumored as a potential presidential candidate in 2020. {mosads}

During her reelection campaign, the Democratic incumbent tried to shut down speculation that she is eyeing a run for the Oval Office — stating that she would not leave her Senate seat early if reelected.

“I will serve my six-year term,” Gillibrand said last month during a debate against Farley, who serves as the financial chair for New York’s Republican Party.

Gillibrand gained more widespread name recognition during the height of the “Me Too” movement, emerging as one of the senators leading the charge against sexual misconduct in both Congress and other workplaces.
