Democrat Sharice Davids is projected to win Kansas’s 3rd District, a big win for Democrats in a suburban area that narrowly rejected President Trump in 2016.
Davids, an attorney and former professional mixed martial arts fighter, unseated four-term Rep. Kevin Yoder (R-Kan.) in his Kansas City-area district.
Davids, a former White House fellow, is set to make history as one of the first Native American women elected to Congress, particularly in a cycle that many view as another “Year of the Woman.”

Democrats had been fiercely targeting this suburban district, which was seen as a crucial part of the party’s path to taking back the House.
The 3rd District has recently moved more to the center after voting for Republican presidential nominees by significant margins in 2008 and 2012, but backing Hillary Clinton by a single point in 2016.
Despite the president’s defeat in the district, Yoder has been a strong Trump ally, voting for the GOP’s tax law and authoring a bill that would secure funding for the border wall.
