Trump defends mistaking Obama for Biden, says he’s being sarcastic
Former President Trump on Monday defended mistaking former President Obama for President Biden, claiming he is being sarcastic to show “others” may have a “very big influence in running” the United States.
“Whenever I sarcastically insert the name Obama for Biden as an indication that others may actually be having a very big influence in running our Country,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Monday. “Ron DeSanctimonious and his failing campaign apparatus, together with the Democrat’s Radical Left ‘Disinformation Machine,’ go wild saying that ‘Trump doesn’t know the name of our President, (CROOKED!) Joe Biden. He must be cognitively impaired,” he added, in reference to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s presidential campaign.
“No, I know both names very well, never mix them up, and know that they are destroying our Country,” Trump continued.
The post comes after a series of Trump’s recent comments that appear to confuse Obama and Biden. Forbes reported earlier this month Trump mixed up Biden and Obama’s names at least seven times in recent months.
The apparent gaffes have come under fire from Trump’s political opponents, including DeSantis’s presidential campaign. Earlier this month, the DeSantis War Room posted a series of Trump’s recent remarks where he appears to confuse Biden and Obama, writing on X, formerly known as Twitter, “Here is a running list of every one of Donald Trump’s fumbles, accidents, and confused moments from this year. (NOTE: this is why his handlers won’t let him debate).”
In another post of a video of an apparent gaffe, the DeSantis War Room said, “Trump has been having serious trouble with names lately. On a number of occasions, he’s confused Obama and Biden. Here’s a really concerning moment.”
Trump on Monday claimed he “aced” a cognitive test as part of a physical exam.
“Also, and as reported, I just took a cognitive test as part of my Physical Exam, and ACED it. Also ACED (a perfect score!) one taken while in the White House. Biden should take one so we can determine why he wants Open Borders, No Energy Independence, A Woke Military, High Inflation, No Voter I.D., Men playing In Women’s Sports, Only Electric Cars & Trucks, A Weaponized DOJ/FBI, and so many other CRAZY things!!!” Trump wrote.
Trump, alongside other GOP candidates and lawmakers, has taken aim at Biden for similar misstatements or apparent gaffes, with many arguing these show the president is too old to run for a second term.
Biden has faced criticism over his age since his 2020 campaign, which has continued throughout his time in the White House. At 81, Biden is the oldest U.S. president. If reelected in 2024, he would be 86 at the end of his second term.
While Trump is only a few years behind at 77, recent polling indicates more voters believe Biden is too old to serve as president when compared with Trump.
Trump has argued Biden is not “too old” to be president, but rather “grossly incompetent.”
Recent polling suggests Trump is leading Biden in hypothetical match-ups, following older polls that show the two rivals in more of a dead heat. A Yahoo News/YouGov poll released earlier this month showed Trump leading Biden 44 percent to 42 percent, while another poll from The New York Times and Siena College showed Biden trailing the former president in five key battleground states.
