Biden campaign hawks ‘Free on Wednesdays’ T-shirts in jab at Trump trial

President Biden and his campaign are taking a jab at former President Trump and his ongoing hush money trial, launching a new fundraising campaign that mocks Trump being “free on Wednesdays,” a nod to the only weekday there is guaranteed to be no court hearing held in the former president’s criminal case.

Trump’s hush money trial, which he is required to attend, is typically held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays in New York, though some weeks have seen additional days off due to scheduling conflicts.

Biden, in a campaign video, first made the jab at Trump while also proposing to debate his 2024 rival in late June, bucking the Commission on Presidential Debates and opting instead to negotiate with TV networks directly. Trump said shortly after the Biden campaign video was released that he would accept the challenge.

Biden’s campaign website then began touting a T-shirt with the text “Free on Wednesdays” for $32.

The White House has so far been painfully careful about weighing in on Trump’s many legal troubles, but the campaign has sometimes attempted to take a jab at Trump over it.

“Trump’s acting like he wants to debate the President. We hear he’s free on Wednesdays. Let’s do it!” a description of the T-shirt reads on the campaign website.

Biden echoed that message in the campaign video early Wednesday.

“Donald Trump lost two debates to me in 2020, and since then he hasn’t shown up for a debate,” Biden said in the video. “Now he’s acting like he wants to debate me again. Well, make my day, pal. I’ll even do it twice.

“So let’s pick dates, Donald. I hear you’re free on Wednesdays,” he added.

Trump faces 34 counts of falsifying business records in connection to reimbursements made to his ex-fixer, Michael Cohen, for a payment made to porn actor Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election to stay quiet about the alleged affair. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and has denied any affair.

Despite being mired in legal troubles, Trump currently has a razor-thin lead over Biden in national polling, with a polling index by The Hill and Decision Desk HQ showing the former president with 44.8 percent support while Biden has 44.6 percent.

Biden appears to be struggling in key battleground states, with a New York Times/Siena College/Philadelphia Inquirer poll, released earlier this week, showing Trump is leading in five out of six swing states.

The Hill has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment.
