Biden campaign agrees to CBS-hosted VP debate

CBS News will host a vice presidential debate in late July or early August, and Vice President Harris has agreed to participate, the Biden campaign said Thursday.

The Biden-Harris campaign said it informed CBS News that it accepted its invitation for a vice presidential debate on either July 23 or Aug. 13. The debate would take place in studio, the campaign said.

“We look forward to the Trump campaign accepting one of these dates so that the full debate calendar for this campaign can be set,” the Biden campaign said.

The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment about whether it would commit to attending the vice presidential debate. Former President Trump has not yet announced his running mate, and he does not have to do so until the Republican National Convention in mid-July.

News that CBS would host the vice presidential debate comes one day after the Biden campaign first proposed holding two presidential debates between Trump and Biden, one in June and one in September.

The two sides quickly agreed to attend a June 27 debate hosted by CNN and a Sept. 10 debate hosted by ABC News.

The Biden campaign had laid out broad parameters for the presidential and vice presidential debates, calling for “firm time limits” and microphones that are only active when it is that candidate’s turn to speak.
