Rep. Kelly Armstrong (R-N.D.) has won the Republican nomination for governor of North Dakota, Decision Desk HQ projects.

Armstrong, who has served as the state’s sole House member since 2019, defeated Lt. Gov. Tammy Miller (R) for the nomination. He will be the clear favorite to succeed outgoing Gov. Doug Burgum (R) in the solidly red state.

Armstrong led comfortably in the few polls taken of the race and had the support of most major figures in the state, including the state party, North Dakota Sens. Kevin Cramer (R) and John Hoeven (R), and North Dakota Secretary of State Michael Howe. He also had the critical support of former President Trump.

But Miller, who has served as lieutenant governor since last year, had Burgum’s endorsement. Burgum chose not to seek a third term in office after having served since 2016.
