Chris Matthews: Biden critics are ‘going to pay for it’

Former MSNBC host and political analyst Chris Matthews said “the elite” critics of President Biden are “going to pay for it.”

Matthews joined MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Thursday to discuss Biden’s political future amid a growing number of Democrats calling on him to step aside.

“Right now, he’s got the poor people, he’s got minorities, he’s got Hispanics, he’s going to put out labor, he’s going to hold that base of the Democratic Party, which he will need in November,” Matthews said.

“And I’m telling you, people are going to end up rooting for him in October, because he will have a comeback,” he added “And then this elite-fashioned attack on him, they’re going to pay for it.”

Matthews’s comments about the Democratic elite turning their backs on Biden follows the news that several top donors, including actor George Clooney, say they will withhold money from the campaign if Biden continues as its nominee.

The political analyst said those who are critical of the president’s reelection campaign will end up voting for him in November.

Matthews also said Biden is much more inclined to listen to first lady Jill Biden than someone like Clooney.

“I think Biden will be the little guy that will be the Democrat in this race, the true Democrat, and he’s going to get people to turn for him in October,” Matthews said. “It’s going to be stunning. He is not quitting. He is not built to quit.”

Matthews’s statements were made the morning before Biden’s pivotal press conference at the NATO summit in Washington on Thursday evening. The event came exactly two weeks after Biden’s poor debate performance sparked panic among Democrats.

Biden at the news conference again rejected calls for him to drop his reelection bid.
