Second gentleman Douglas Emhoff challenged former President Trump over his attacks on Vice President Harris on Tuesday, brushing off the nicknames the Republican has given his new election rival.
Trump has dubbed Harris “Laughin’ Kamala” and “Lyin’ Kamala” in attacks on her since she jumped into the presidential race Monday.
“That’s all he’s got?” Emhoff questioned at an event Tuesday.
Emhoff remarked that his wife has clearly laid out her path to victory since joining the race and is campaigning on paving a future for America.
“You heard the vice president yesterday making the case against Donald Trump — very clearly laid out the case, directly and in a compelling fashion,” he said. “But she also laid out a vision for the future. A vision where there’s freedom. Where we’re not having to talk about these issues of today in this post-Dobbs hellscape that Donald Trump created.”
Harris and Trump are neck and neck in early polls since President Biden ended his reelection campaign Sunday. Democrats have quickly coalesced around Harris, who effectively locked up the party’s nomination with a majority of delegates pledging to her late Monday.
Her campaign has come out to a fast start, breaking fundraising records; she raised more than $80 million in the first 24 hours alone, with millions more raised for other Democratic organizations.
“You see the enthusiasm. You see the excitement,” Emhoff said. “You saw the money raised, you saw the party coalesce, you saw the broad base of support that she had in just one or two days, because she’s talking about an America that we all have a place in.”
