The ‘squad’ to hold virtual rally for Cori Bush ahead of Tuesday primary
Progressive allies of Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) will hold a virtual rally Monday ahead of her high-stakes primary on Tuesday, which could deal another blow to a “squad” House member.
The virtual event will be held over Zoom on Monday night and feature various left-wing allies of Bush, including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), Summer Lee (D-Pa.) and Democratic Senate candidate Hill Harper of Michigan.
“We have just ONE DAY ahead of us before primary Election Day. Come join Cori & some very special guests on Election Day eve to rally together and get out the vote!” Bush wrote in an Instagram post Sunday to promote the event.
Bush will square off against Wesley Bell, a prosecuting attorney from St. Louis County, for the Democratic nomination for the state’s 1st Congressional District.
Despite being the incumbent, Bush is seen as the underdog, especially following Bowman’s loss in New York. Both progressives have been outspoken critics of Israel amid its war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip, and they have been targeted by the powerful American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) as a result.
Bush was among a small handful of House members who opposed a resolution that expressed support for Israel shortly after the war began.
Israel’s war in Gaza has killed nearly 40,000 people, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledges to eliminate the threat of Hamas, which launched a surprise assault on Israel last October that killed more than 1,100 people and kidnapped 250 others.
With the backing of AIPAC, Bell has suggested Bush is too divisive, attempting to shore up support from frustrated moderates.
AIPAC also spent big on the push to oust Bowman in New York earlier this year.
Bush’s district is heavily Democratic, and the primary winner is expected to be the heavy favorite in November.
A June poll showed Bush and Bell in a dead heat, but a poll last week showed Bell pulling away.
