Stephanie Grisham tells Democratic convention Trump mocks his own supporters
CHICAGO — Former Trump White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham told the Democratic National Convention that former President Trump mocks his own supporters in remarks rebutting her ex-boss.
“I wasn’t just a Trump supporter, I was a true believer. I was one of his closest advisers,” Grisham, who has become one of the highest-profile GOP critics of Trump, said Tuesday.
She said she spent Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Florida property, to stress that she saw him when the cameras were off.
“Behind closed doors, Trump mocks his supporters. He calls them ‘basement dwellers,’” she said. “He has no empathy, no morals and no fidelity to the truth.”
Grisham also outlined that during the Jan. 6, 2021, riots at the U.S. Capitol, she asked former first lady Melania Trump if the team could post on social media that there’s no place for lawlessness or violence.
“She replied with one word, ‘No,’” Grisham said, and an image of the conversation between Grisham and the former first lady was projected onstage.
Grisham endorsed Vice President Harris for president earlier this month, the campaign announced as part of their launch of “Republicans for Harris.” The launch included 25 GOP endorsements, which also included Olivia Troye, ex-national security adviser to former Vice President Mike Pence.
“Kamala Harris tells the truth, she respects the American people and she has my vote,” Grisham said Tuesday.
Grisham had a stint serving as White House press secretary, though she never held a single briefing with reporters, and then served as Melania Trump’s press secretary. She resigned following Jan. 6.
