GOP Gov. Phil Scott wins reelection in blue Vermont

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott’s (R) easily won reelection in the state’s gubernatorial race, according to projections from Decision Desk HQ.

With his victory in the largely blue state, Scott will enter his fifth term as governor.

The Green Mountain State is one of two states — New Hampshire being the other — that offers unlimited two-limit terms for governor. Eleven other states have unlimited four-year terms.

During the 2024 presidential primaries, the Republican governor put his support behind former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, before she withdrew her bid. Haley later said she would support former President Trump for the White House, but Scott did not follow suit.

The Vermont governor has been a vocal critic of Trump since his first presidential run in 2016. He also openly supported House Democrats’ efforts to impeach the former president in 2019.

In the 2020 election, Scott opted to vote for President Biden over the GOP nominee.

“President Trump has had four years to unite this country and has failed to do so,” the governor said at the time.

Scott said Tuesday he voted for Vice President Harris, arguing he had to “put country over party.” 

Scott, 66, has also served in the Vermont state Senate and as lieutenant governor. 

In 2023, he was voted “most popular governor” nationwide, according to polling at the time from Morning Consult.

The Hill/DDHQ has ranked Vermont as “safely Democrat.”
