Greene easily wins reelection in Georgia

GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.) easily won reelection Tuesday, fending off a challenge from Democrat Shawn Harris, a retired Army general, in Georgia’s deep-red 14th District, Decision Desk HQ projects.

The outcome was never in question in the rural district occupying Georgia’s northwesternmost corner, where Trump won in 2020 by more than 37 points. And Greene, who has centered her political career on her staunch support for the former president, likely got a boost from having Trump at the top of the ticket once again.

While she was not among the conservatives who helped to topple former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) last year, she has since launched a vendetta with McCarthy’s successor, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), forcing a vote in May to oust him

That effort failed, after Democrats jumped in to rescue the Speaker. But Greene’s continued criticism of Johnson — particularly over his willingness to work with Democrats on federal spending bills — has complicated the Speaker’s efforts to remain the top House Republican in the next Congress.

Greene’s no-hold-bars approach — combined with her promotion of conspiracy theories and advocacy for the Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 — has made her a loathed figure on the left. And Democrats from around the country had made Greene a top target in 2022, when her Democratic challenger raised more than $16 million — an enormous sum for any House candidate, let alone a first-time contender in a rural district.

The push was all but futile in the deep-red 14th District: Greene won the race by 32 points. And this time around, Democratic donors weren’t so generous, leaving Greene with a substantial cash advantage. Over the cycle, she outspent Harris by a tally of $8.3 million to $2.1 million, according to Open Secrets
