Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) said Wednesday that tax cuts have been key to his state’s shift to the left in the wake of President-elect Trump’s win in the 2024 presidential election.

Republicans made gains in large portions of the U.S. in the 2024 presidential election, according to a map from The New York Times. However, some of the few parts of the Times map where Democrats gained traction were in Colorado, which Polis has led since 2019.

In response to a user on the social platform X asking him “the secret” behind multiple parts of Colorado going in the opposite political direction from the rest of the country, Polis responded, “Prosperity and abundance agenda.”

“We have focused on saving people money through three income tax rate reductions (two at the ballot box and one through the leg: 4.63%>4.5%>4.4%>4.25%), cutting property taxes, free preschool and kindergarten for every child, eliminating sales tax on necessities like diapers and feminine hygiene products, and we are in the process of delivering on pro-housing supply solutions, investing in transit and transit-enhanced living opportunities… all while protecting and expanding personal freedom and respect for everyone,” he continued in his post on X.

Trump won another four years in the White House on Wednesday, rattling Democrats across the country. According to projections from Decision Desk HQ, he won all seven key battleground states of Arizona, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan and North Carolina, six of which Biden won in 2020.

He also became the first Republican presidential nominee to win the popular vote since 2004, sparking further soul-searching and finger-pointing within the Democratic Party.

However, in some battleground states where Trump was victorious, Democrats including Sens. Jacky Rosen (Nev.) and Tammy Baldwin (Wis.), Rep. Elissa Slotkin (Mich.) and North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein all won Senate or gubernatorial races, according to projections from Decision Desk HQ.
