Texas GOP Rep. Morgan Luttrell not seeking reelection

Rep. Morgan Luttrell (R-Texas) on Thursday announced he won’t seek reelection after two terms in the House, “choosing a different path” closer to home in Texas.

“When I first ran for Congress, my mission was clear: strengthen our border, stand up for our veterans, and be a strong voice for Texas. I’m proud of the real progress we’ve made,” Luttrell said in a statement shared to the social platform X.

“But over the July 4th weekend, standing in floodwaters alongside my neighbors, I had a moment of clarity. It reminded me that while the work in Washington is important, my family, my community, and my state need me here – closer to home.”

Luttrell, a former Navy SEAL who won his seat in Texas’s deep-red 8th Congressional District in 2022, said he’s not stepping away from service, but “choosing a different path – one that allows me to stay rooted in Texas and focus on the people and places that matter most.”

The congressman said he plans to serve the remainder of his term before stepping back from public office at the end of 2026.

“Texas is where I belong – and it’s where I can do the most good,” Luttrell said.

Luttrell won reelection by a whopping 37 points over his Democratic challenger last November.

Texas has approved new congressional maps ahead of the midterms that are expected to net five GOP seats by squeezing Democrat-held districts and shifting lines throughout the state. Analysis from The Texas Tribune indicates that Luttrell’s 8th District will remain overwhelmingly red; President Trump won the old district by roughly 34 points, and he would have won the new one by around 28 points.
